The Mindset of a Bodybuilder...

The Mindset of a Bodybuilder…

The mindset of a bodybuilder is something we can all learn from.  My health mentors all had it to varying degrees, and somehow I picked it up along the way as well.  No, I am not simply referring to building big bulky muscles.  I am referring to the desire to build a better body.  Of course there are some crazy, insane, and downright dangerous things going on in the field of body building, but equally thereare some fascinating and helpful things to be learned from it as well.  IMGP9321_copy.jpg

My wife, April, has been competing in the Figure Class of bodybuilding – a class that is more concerned about the shape, tone and symmetry of the body.  You would be surprised at the amount of time and energy that goes into preparing your body for such a competition.  I am extremely proud of her, and impressed with people who can make such a tremendous commitment to their body.

Now, I understand that most of us have no interest in bodybuilding, daily 5a.m. cardio sessions, strict eating plans, etc.  But, I do understand that one of the reasons I became a Doctor of Chiropractic is to help people find the motivation, the will power… the desire to build a better body, and better future.

The problem is I can tell a person that they need to exercise more.  I can show a person exactly what to do in the gym to get results.  I can yell, scream, plead and beg, but none of this will be effective if that person simply does not have the DESIRE to improve.

Ever wonder why, aside from vanity, some people have a greater desire to be healthy and physically fit than others?  I believe the answer lies in their PERSPECTIVE.  One perspective is getting through the day with little thought about cause and effect in relation to their future.  Another perspective is making the most of the day knowing that their actions today can improve their life tomorrow.

A question to ask yourself is… which perspective do you start your day with?

The mindset of a “true bodybuilder” is one who is actively improving their health, their body, their life and therefore their future.  They make goals, they seek advice and assistance, they are always learning and improving, they stay focused and committed, and as a result they realize what its like to tap into their potential and get real results.  They don’t often times “cheat”, or renegotiate their goals and commitments.  They know what is at stake… to improve their body or not improve.  They are always cognizant of the consequences of their actions and their decisions.

We all have to understand, our body is always changing, every second and every minute of our lives.  We are in control of how WELL BUILT our body is at any moment in time.  With this power comes great responsibility.  The ability to improve or not improve is a function of our own desire to do so.

Perhaps it is time to rekindle the desire that lay dormant within.  Trust me, its there.  The desire, the potential, the ability to change… we were born with it, and it is always present.  Reconnecting and staying connected with that innate, inborn potential is the key.  It ain’t easy, but it sure is rewarding!

Dr. Craig Burns
